A Bump in Life

signcontractI have a big and exciting announcement to make!!!

I just signed a contract with B&H Publishing for a book I wrote called A Bump in Life: True Stories of Hope & Courage during an Unplanned Pregnancy. It releases on October 1st, 2013 in stores nationwide to kick off Pro-Life month! This book will have amazing stories of bravery and courage from girls that were in a season where everything seemed hopeless. Some stories are just a glimpse or a moment in their pregnancy, and some are an in-depth account of an unforgettable experience that changed a life—or two—forever. They are the kind of stories that make you tear up, laugh and ultimately have a new respect for girls that have chosen LIFE.

The foreword is written by Dan Dean of Phillips, Craig and Dean. He shares his heart as a father having to watch his daughter go through an unplanned pregnancy and how he witnessed firsthand God’s power to save, forgive and heal through her little “bump in life.” He can’t imagine his life without his precious granddaughter.

My fun writing journey began at a women’s conference at Gateway Church in Southlake, TX called Pink Impact 2011. I was the lead for decor and the theme was “Live It.” I was to try to come up with decor that empowered women to live outside of the box and to leave completely changed, excited to live out the destiny God has for them. I had a giant walk-in tent where women could come in throughout the conference and, as the Lord led, write down how they were inspired to “live it.” Women started posting amazing notes and the tent was filling up more and more each day the conference was in session.

I felt like God was speaking to me to write a book. It was just a word at the time and I had no idea how and of course doubted my qualifications in doing so but I went ahead and hung my “live it” note up, WRITE A BOOKliveitbook

Later that day, Jan Greenwood, the women’s pastor of Gateway stepped into the tent as I was checking on things and tidying up. She had just tweeted a picture of my note and had captioned it, “Amen, Sister!” We started talking about how God was speaking to both of us  about writing a book. Jan said, “I figured out the best way to do it is to have an accountability group. There are too many excuses and silly reasons that can get in the way of actually sitting down to write but if we had a small group of women that held each other accountable, maybe we would be more focused on making this dream happen. I’m going to start one in a few months and you should come.” Whoa! How God planned us to meet at that very moment and that we calculated a plan on how we could carry out our “live it” dream in the “live it” tent!

We started meeting monthly with a group of women for about 5 months. Jan showed us the difference between self publishing and traditional publishing and all the publishing method’s in between. There was so much information to soak up with all of the choices but I prayed and felt like God was leading me to try traditional publishing. It was scary to me to put all my hard work out there for people to either accept or reject me, but I felt ready. I wanted to try to get this book in as many hands as possible so that babies would be saved and hope would be renewed … traditional publishing seemed the best way to make that happen.

By the time our little book writers group ended and I had a good start on my proposal, I gave birth to my 4th child, a sweet baby boy named Judah and well you know … life happened. Thing’s slowed WAY down. I worked on it here and there after my kids went to sleep. It felt like it was taking forever to finish but coincidentally enough, I finished the next year and sent it out to literary agents the first day of Pink Impact the following year, exactly one year after my “live it” declaration! A few weeks later, I had a few offers of representation and I chose Rachel Kent with Books & Such in California. I loved that she was pregnant at the time and when we spoke, she was already giving me ideas that were awesome and felt like we could brainstorm well together. She had a heart for God that I loved and I felt confident that she would represent me well.

We tweaked the proposal and a few weeks later, said a prayer and sent it off to all the Christian publishers, hoping that someone believed in the idea as much as we did. We got an offer and decided to go with B&H Publishing. They have awesome books that I love and felt like they were a great fit for my book. They publish greats from Priscilla Shirer, Beth Moore, Jen Hatmaker, and tons more. Some of their best sellers include Love Dare, Courageous, The Vow, October Baby, and Resolution for Men. I love all of their cover designs and style.

I did so much research on traditional publishing and everything I read said that the odds were against it happening. I didn’t have a connection. I didn’t “know someone.” I just pitched it the old fashioned way, but God opened up doors in order for His will to happen. I am not a beautiful writer, but I have a story to share. If God can use me in this way, He can use ANYONE. All you have to do is say YES to his voice. He will open doors, make connections, put people in your path, and order your steps to catapult you into your destiny!

“Write this. Write what you see. Write it out in big block letters so that it can be read on the run.” {Habakkuk 2:2}

More details coming soon!

How will you Live It? What is God whispering to your heart? What is the first step to obey his voice?
