Ever since I was a little girl, I have always wanted to fly. I even had a recurring dream that I was flying over the earth soaking in a different view of my world, a free, liberating, peaceful and exciting view. But that was the only place I was free. Then I would wake up, and once again, it was only a dream.

Growing into the teenage years, I also had the strongest desire to fly. The now titled “classic rock” songs of my youth focused on flying with such titles as “Time for me to fly,” and “Icarus-Borne on Wings of Steel.”  I actually had that one down to be played at my funeral!

As the years have passed, I have been continually reminded of my heart’s desire to fly. I have just never known what to do with it!

Wandering through life, continually being grounded, my wings clipped with such things as addiction, unplanned pregnancy, teenage marriage and divorce, insecurities running rampant, loneliness, and rebellion. The dream/vision continually being deadened by reality or so I thought.

Fast forward to some years ago, The Lord reminded me of my dream of flying. I actually started to have the recurring dream again, only this time with a little different spin on it. I started to fly and now land and sing! I began to see myself free both in the air and on the ground! What an amazing revelation. But it was still a dream, right?

These last few years have been an incredible time of “newness,” a time of stirring the dreams, visions, inside of me. It started with God replacing my “funeral” song with one of life-flying. Then, little by little, He has restored my dreams of flying with a new definition, the true meaning. Then, starting with my birthday this year, He has taught me His version of dreaming, flying and singing. I received a gift of a necklace with a bird on it, stating “I’ll fly away.” The dear friend that gave it to me had no idea that was my dream! Shortly after that, another dear friend gave a group of ladies a word of God saying “It is time to sing your song, a new song.”  Again, she had no knowledge of my dream. So, being quick like I am, I began to realize God telling me to take note and listen! Suddenly everything around me was encouraging me to sing and fly!!  I was sharing this with another friend and she said you know, to fly one must lose control and rely on the wind to carry you! WOW! The Lord furthered this thought saying to me, “It is not about our strength or what we are doing but the force of the wind under our wings that guides us.”

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”  {Isaiah 40:31}

What I have learned in the last month or so is that I can fly! In God’s strength and hope, I can fly! I’m supposed to fly!

“It is for freedom that Christ has set me free!” {Galatians 5:1}

“You, my brothers and sisters were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” {Galatians 5:13}

And sing. Sing the new song I have given you!!

Does this mean that everything is a bed of roses in my life? Most definitely not!! Do I still deal with life’s circumstances and hard times? Absolutely! Things such as insecurity, illness of myself and loved ones, people being people around me, attacks of the enemy and so on. But the truth is, I get to fly in the midst of all this! Not by denial, not by ignoring the circumstances, but letting God be my Wind. And when I’m needing rest….? Well He has a promise for that too!

“Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wing.” {Psalm 63:7}

“Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings….” {Psalm 17:8}

“Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.” {Psalm 57:1}

Please allow me to emphasis one thing here. Take note that in this time and season, I have very dear friends that have listened to God, shared their words of encouragement, wisdom and visions also. I cannot stress enough to surround yourself with others that have “of like faith,” ones who will have your best interest at heart.  One’s who know that they, like you, can fly. Or when they haven’t the strength to fly or sing, they know to rest and take refuge under His wing.

My new song? Embrace Grace, Embrace Love, Embrace Mercy. As in the titled book by Maya Angelou, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” yes one of my favs, I want to help others take flight and sing their song that God has given them to share! Just remember……..

“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” {Philippians 1:6}

So dear one….. Take refuge when needed, watch out who’s in your nest with you, sing your song and TAKE FLIGHT!!!  I’ll see you in the air!
