I heard a story about a 19 year old college girl who had all her plans laid out before her. She came from Seadrift, a small fisherman town on the Texas coast. She was the youngest of three, born to a Preacher and his wife.

When she made the move from small town to “big town” Waxahachie, little did she know what a great adventure lay ahead of her. Two weeks before her first semester ended she met a 21 year old, outgoing guy! She wasn’t interested, but he was determined in his pursuit. He pursued her, right on into the summer of 1978.

They soon after, began dating, fell in love, got engaged, and were planning a bright beautiful future together.

She realized one day that a mistake would soon be known by all who looked at her. She found out she was pregnant. All at once her plans of becoming the next big Christian singer were spinning out of her hands. She told her fiancé she could not have a baby! He said, “We made a mistake, that is true, but we are planning our wedding, and God will help us through this.”

She said, “I am not going to have this baby, I want an abortion!”

Being young, scared and in love; tension was running high. She asked him to call and schedule her for an abortion.

He said, “This is my baby too, I want this baby!”

But on the other hand, he loved her and wanted to be there for her. He didn’t want her to push him away. Again he made it clear to her that he wanted the baby and he wanted her. He called and made the appointment. She stopped talking to him (like moody girls do) and he began to pray like crazy!

The night before the scheduled abortion she prayed, cried, and read her bible, over and over again. She told God, “I know this is wrong but….” “I need You to speak to me or I will go through with this.” She was reading in Psalms and came to Psalm 139:13-16

For You formed my inward parts;
You covered me in my mother’s womb.
 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well.
 My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.
And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me,
When as yet there were none of them.

After reading this she cried out to God and said, “I have to hear from You, please speak to me!” Two hours before her appointment God broke through the silence and said this…“Denise, when you stand in My throne room, I will ask you on that day, what did you do with the child I gave you?”

In that moment everything changed for her! She called her fiancé and asked him to call and cancel the abortion appointment. He had a thousand questions for her, but at that time he just made the call.

Allan: “I am calling to cancel Denise’s appointment.”

Receptionist: “Ok. When would you like to reschedule her?”

Allan: “We don’t want to reschedule.”

Receptionist: “Do you realize the longer you wait, the more likely she is to have the baby?!!???!!”

Allan: “That is the general idea here! Good bye!”

For a while Denise didn’t tell Allan why she changed her mind. She wanted the baby, but she didn’t want to get married any more. He asked her if they could meet with her Dad. She agreed. Her father gave his thoughts, “I know that you love each other. You made a mistake, but that is nothing God can’t cover. I think the baby should grow up carrying the father’s name and being raised by both mother and father.” That is all her little frightened heart needed to hear, her Father’s blessing over her life! All the sudden she was back to her happy, affectionate, carefree self. Allan was a little baffled, but was just happy to have his fiancé back! They started up with the wedding plans, were married when she was 6 months pregnant … And three months later I took my first breath.

Yes, I was that baby!

I didn’t have a say in the decision of living or dying, I wasn’t asked if I wanted to enter into this family. But God knew, my earthly Father wanted me, and his prayers helped in turning my Mother’s heart. This is my story. This is why I started volunteering, and now work at a Pregnancy Center. This is why I walked 250 miles, from Houston to Dallas  (with the Back to Life Movement) praying for the ending of legalized abortion in our nation. This is why I had a strong desire to start a chapter of Embrace Grace in Grand Prairie, Texas. God expressed grace over my parents when they had sex before marriage, He showed grace when my Mom cried out to hear His voice, He has expressed grace in and through my life time and time again. What is grace you ask? Undeserved forgiveness.

And this is why I, embrace grace.
